In a pioneering move towards sustainable design, the architecture powerhouse ZHA, previously known as Zaha Hadid Architects, has partnered with the Spanish company Nagami to debut the Echo Chair. This innovative seating design utilizes 3D printing technology and is constructed from regenerated plastic materials, marking a significant step in environmentally conscious furniture production.
The Echo Chair captivates with its fluid, sculptural silhouette, featuring a backrest that elegantly curves towards the floor and a seat expertly shaped to cradle the user. A remarkable aspect of its construction is that these seemingly distinct components are produced as a singular, continuous entity. According to ZHA, the chair embodies a unified system that seamlessly integrates structure, surface, and ergonomic principles, with one surface reflecting the other, evolving from a common geometric foundation while fulfilling a unique function. This collaborative effort leverages Nagami's expertise in 3D printing with recycled plastics, particularly polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PET) sourced from industrial refuse, including single-use medical plastics. The resulting furniture boasts a distinctive ribbed texture, a direct outcome of the layered additive manufacturing process. ZHA emphasized that the Echo Chair emerged from an iterative research process at their lab, combining sophisticated computational design with large-scale additive manufacturing, thus creating a new paradigm for architecture and design by repurposing waste into refined creations.
Drawing inspiration from the natural world, the Echo Chair is available in four distinct color palettes: classic white, deep black, a subtle white-to-translucent gradient, and a rich caramel tone derived from a bio-based cork composite. This eco-conscious chair is currently on display at London Creates, an architecture and design exposition curated by ZHA, running until July 26th at The Truman Brewery. The collaboration continues Nagami's earlier venture into 3D-printed furniture in 2018, which also featured designs by ZHA. This launch follows ZHA principal Patrik Schumacher's recent announcement regarding the rebranding of the studio, a decision made after successfully concluding a legal dispute with the Zaha Hadid Foundation concerning the use of the name.
