Fum Restaurant: A Culinary and Design Fusion in Atlanta
Füm, a new Atlanta restaurant, captivates diners with its unique interior design featuring sculptural plaster forms inspired by bone and tissue. Metanoia Designs, an acclaimed Indian architectural practice, has recently unveiled a distinctive beauty salon in Ahmedabad, meticulously crafted to evoke the tranquil ambiance of twilight. The firm, led by architects Prakhar Jain and Shivangi Sharma, was tasked with conceptualizing a space for Geetanjali Salon that would redefine the conventional wellness environment, moving beyond typical salon archetypes.
This innovative project, christened Saanjh—a Hindi term for dusk—is characterized by its pervasive use of a rust-toned material palette. This deliberate choice creates an immersive atmosphere reminiscent of sun-baked earth at sunset, offering patrons a unique and transformative grooming experience. The design philosophy emphasizes locally sourced materials, celebrating the enduring beauty and resonance of Indian craftsmanship. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a reception area adorned with red Agra sandstone and a commanding monolithic welcome desk fashioned from stone and weathered steel, setting a sculptural tone for the entire establishment.
The ground floor is anchored by a gallery-like hairstyling area, featuring mirrors strategically placed between pillars, creating a performance-driven space. Stylists work beneath circular cutouts that cast a soft, halo-like illumination, enhancing the ritualistic aspect of grooming. Adjacent to this central hub are a dedicated hair coloring gallery and a barber's station, with a men's grooming section discreetly tucked away behind a traditional jaali-inspired latticed screen. A striking white sculptural staircase gracefully ascends to the upper level, which houses private treatment rooms and bespoke bridal spaces, thoughtfully designed to accommodate the extended and personal services often associated with traditional Indian weddings, ensuring these significant moments feel unhurried and exceptional.
Metanoia Designs' creation of the Saanjh salon is a testament to how architectural ingenuity can transform everyday experiences into something profound and memorable. By drawing inspiration from natural phenomena and cultural heritage, the design cultivates a calming, almost timeless environment where self-care transcends mere routine to become a deeply immersive and reflective ritual. This project exemplifies a positive step towards integrating aesthetic beauty with functional design, enriching the human experience through thoughtful and culturally resonant spaces.
