Mariam Issoufou Architects, based in Niger, has envisioned a unique dining establishment in the heart of New York City, named Gourmega. This innovative restaurant, characterized by its deep, subdued tones and a distinctive arrangement of interconnected circular tables, is housed within a venerable 19th-century structure in Manhattan's South Village Historic District. Distinguished as a "zero-waste" establishment, Gourmega's interior design is a thoughtful culmination of extensive historical inquiry into the site's past. The architectural firm's research unveiled a profound narrative, revealing that the area, once known as the 'Land of the Blacks' in the 1700s, was home to numerous African-owned farms and one of the earliest saloons catering to African Americans.
