The Rebirth of an Iconic Design: Lina Bo Bardi's Azul Lounge Chair by Paola Lenti
Paola Lenti has reissued the Azul lounge chair, a piece originally designed by the pioneering modernist architect and designer Lina Bo Bardi for her São Paulo home. This charming and simple chair, featuring a tubular metal frame and textile belts, is now available to a global audience, celebrating Bo Bardi's minimalist aesthetic and Lenti's commitment to preserving design heritage.
In a striking collaboration unveiled at Salone del Mobile, American furniture giant Knoll has partnered with the visionary Texas designer Dozie Kanu. Together, they have crafted an exquisite collection of leather-fringed tables that masterfully intertwine the rich symbolism of African ceremonial attire with the rugged charm of Texas cowboy culture. This unique fusion results in furniture pieces that are not merely functional but also tell a compelling story of diverse cultural influences.
The Dozie Kanu Table Collection by Knoll features a console, a coffee table, and a side table, each distinctively wrapped in either bronze or dark manganese leather skirts, complete with flowing, floor-length tassels. Kanu's Nigerian and Texan heritage, coupled with his experiences living and working in Portugal, profoundly shaped these designs. The design philosophy draws inspiration from an African drum in Kanu's personal collection, while the fringed skirts evoke both traditional African ceremonial garments and the iconic imagery of Texan cowboy fashion.
These tables are constructed with steel rods, which create a compelling visual contrast against the smooth, taut leather. A key feature of the design is the fringe lining, which moves gracefully with the slightest touch, playfully revealing hidden storage spaces beneath. This dynamic element transforms what would typically be a static piece of furniture into an animated object, encouraging viewers to envision broader creative possibilities within contemporary interiors.
The collection is poised to be the centerpiece of Knoll's presentation at the 2026 Salone del Mobile, a highlight of Milan's annual design week. Dozie Kanu, a Houston native now based in Portugal, is celebrated for his sculptural furniture and installations. His artistic journey includes a notable solo exhibition at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 2019, showcasing his innovative approach to design.
Other notable happenings at Salone del Mobile 2026 include the launch of the Matera brand by designer Stefan Scholten and Stone Made Italy founder Manuela Rotta at the event's inaugural collectible design fair. The Milan design week promises a vibrant array of exhibitions, with numerous unmissable design showcases spread across the city, building on the trends of funky chairs and chunky seating observed in previous years. This year's event continues to push boundaries, blending global influences and innovative craftsmanship to redefine contemporary design.
