Coastal-Inspired Penthouse in Belgium by Merckx-Holvoet Architecten

Embracing the serene beauty of the Belgian North Sea coastline, the V Penthouse, envisioned by Antwerp-based Merckx-Holvoet Architecten, showcases an interior design deeply rooted in its natural surroundings. This exquisite holiday dwelling, located in the charming seaside village of Duinbergen, occupies the top two floors of a building, offering residents unparalleled views of the expansive sea.

The architectural vision for this 150-square-meter residence was to create an environment that is both enveloping and subtly revealing, prioritizing poetic expression and refined details. The design team meticulously selected a subdued material palette and a range of neutral colors, echoing the sandy dunes and the tranquil seascape. Throughout the penthouse, sandblasted Travertino Noce stone walls, lime-based flooring, and solid oakwood accents contribute to a cohesive and elegant aesthetic. The lower level features a central entrance foyer, from which a sculpturally designed solid oak staircase ascends to the upper floor, connecting a sea-view living room with a combined kitchen and dining area, both extending to a verandah.

Further enhancing the sophisticated ambiance, the living room is adorned with neutral-toned furnishings and modernist pieces, including a parchment leather-clad coffee table. The kitchen boasts floor-to-ceiling Travertino Noce shutters concealing built-in workstations and storage, complemented by an oak wood island with an Egyptian sandstone top. The dining area features a custom-made Italian lavastone-topped table, an L-shaped bench crafted from Egyptian sandstone and oak wood, and woven dining chairs. The harmonious material theme extends to the primary and guest bedrooms upstairs, where the primary bedroom's ensuite, with its sloping roof and strategically placed picture windows, offers panoramic North Sea views. Custom furniture and lighting, such as a mahogany table lamp and an aluminum outdoor stool, along with minimalist artworks by renowned artists, complete this exceptionally designed coastal retreat.

This project exemplifies how architectural design can draw profound inspiration from its immediate environment, creating spaces that are not only functional but also deeply evocative and harmoniously integrated with nature. The V Penthouse stands as a testament to thoughtful design, where every element contributes to a sense of peace and understated luxury, inviting residents to connect with the serene beauty of the coast and fostering a lifestyle of tranquility and appreciation for natural aesthetics.
