Baird Architects, an American architecture studio, has introduced its initial furniture offering, the BA Objeto collection. This line features a variety of seating, tables, and shelving units, conceived by the firm's architects and collaborative partners, and meticulously crafted in Portugal.
The BA Objeto collection comprises twelve distinct items, spearheaded by Matthew Baird, the founder of Baird Architects. He personally contributed several designs and also enlisted the talents of his studio's team members and external associates. Each piece is attributed to its respective creator, who, according to Baird, will receive a portion of the sales. Among the notable creations are a solid walnut 'surf' table by Baird himself, a gracefully curved aluminum coffee table by Ines Gulbenskian, and a deep brown cork bench designed by Gina Jiang. The production predominantly takes place in Lisbon, Portugal, where Baird Architects has established a new facility dedicated to its furniture endeavors. Baird emphasizes that the collection is unified by a thoughtful approach to materials, a clean aesthetic, and a drive to innovate within furniture design.
This initiative signifies an evolution in the studio's operations, extending beyond one-off furniture commissions and illustrating an alternative business strategy for architectural practices. Baird views furniture as a natural extension of their architectural work, allowing them to delve into material exploration, form, and skilled craftsmanship on a more personal level. He also expressed a desire to honor the individual designers within his studio, granting them creative freedom while fostering a collective spirit. Other items in the collection include a mirror by Portuguese designer Teresa Mascarenhas and a plywood and leather chair by designer Katy Cheng. Baird notes that this collection builds upon the bespoke furniture the studio has previously created for private clients, and they are already anticipating a second collection. This move aligns with a broader trend in the design world, where designers and architects are seeking to reform business models to gain more recognition and financial benefit from their work.
The launch of Baird Architects' BA Objeto collection exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to design, demonstrating how architectural expertise can translate into innovative furniture. By empowering individual designers and emphasizing thoughtful craftsmanship, the studio not only expands its creative horizons but also fosters a more equitable and inspiring environment for artistic expression. This venture champions ingenuity and collaboration, setting a positive precedent for the design industry's future.
